How to Fix “Handle Already in Use” Error When Exporting Products
When exporting a product from Dropast to your Shopify store, you may encounter the following error message:
“Handle 'xxxxx' already in use. Please provide a new handle.”
This error means your Shopify store already contains a product using the same SEO-friendly URL (also known as a handle). Shopify requires all product handles to be unique, and will block the export if there’s a conflict.
🛠 How to Resolve This Error
Step 1: Edit the Product Title in Dropast
- Go to your Dropast List
- Find the product that caused the error
- Click Edit on the product
- Change the product title (this will generate a new handle)
📌 Note: Shopify automatically generates the product handle from the title. Updating the title will prevent handle conflicts.
Step 2: Re-export the Product
- After editing the title, click Add to Store again to export the product to Shopify
- The new title will generate a unique handle, resolving the issue
✅ Why This Happens
Shopify uses the product title to create a URL “handle” (e.g., yourstore.com/products/your-product-name). If another product in your store already uses the same handle, Shopify blocks duplicates to avoid URL conflicts.
